Who Won The First - 2020 Debate

The Debate yesterday  was  one of the most-watched debates of modern times and was heavily consequential to deciding the identity of the next President of the United States. As of now, Joe Biden is on track to be the President due to his electoral strengths in the Northeastern and Southwestern parts of the United States.

Here is the map:

The truth is states where . The three states where this is most reflective are the states of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania otherwise known as the "Rust Belt". But 4 years ago  The Rust Belt single-handedly gave Trump the victory in the election. Though the rust belt isn't just a good place to see how Trump won the Electoral College it's also a good place to see what forces helped propel Trump into the Presidency.

Here are the reasons why Trump won in the first place:

1) Discontent among the White Working Class:  Around the 2016 election manufacturers and steel companies were in real trouble overall the economy wasn't good. Trump ran as an outsider and spoke to these voters and presented a plan and Hillary Clinton never spoke to those voters. These voters responded to Trump because Trump was the only one who talked to them. This wasn't Trump's victory it was Hillary's failure.

2) Bringing the Republican Coalition together -- The truth is that Republican Presidents usually win if they are able to consolidate the Republican base and that's why Trump won in 2016. That's no different from Trump because Trump was able to unite the Republicans many factions through his anti-establishment message and hatred towards the democrats.

Overall, these two core reasons allowed for a Trump win. But 2016 is no 2020

With the Pandemic and Race Relations taking center stage this debate was supposed to be a salvage operation for Trump but Biden soundly won the Debate. And the reasons that helped Trump aren't going to help him this time.

Throughout the debate Biden was very clear and on-message through the debate laying out clear messages that voters could remember. Trump on the other hand proved he still has an anger problem and made many ranting statements that muddled his statements. Biden was smart in his debate performance making it about the American people not about the records of Trump and himself. Overall, Biden is acting more a President than the current one himself.
